Layers

Post by masii5270 » Sun Oct 23, 2022 8:25 pm

Is there a way to combine multiple layers in a drawing into one layer?
thanks,
Mike S.

Yes. Note: If an entity attribute on a source layer is controlled "By Layer" then all entities will adapt the target layer attributes. Would that be OK?
e.g. Layer red, layer blue and layer white are merged on layer magenta - all entities will then be magenta. Same story with Linetyp etcetc.
Work smart, not hard: QCad Pro
Win10/64, QcadPro, QcadCam version: Current.

Mike,

The reason for Husky's question is the common purpose of layers.
They are meant to group things that should look alike.
Refer to: https://www.ribbonsoft.com/en/tutorial- ... ith-layers

On the other hand Blocks are intended to group things that belong to the same geometry.
And that can include all kinds of colors and line styles.
Still, in QCAD one should avoid what is called 'Massive Blocks'.
E.g. a first floor Block besides a second floor Block and so on.

There are several ways to move/copy entities from one Layer to another.
Any of those methods can be used to move/copy to an existent or to a new layer.

Selecting all entities of a Layer can be done with 'Select Layer Entities' (Y+).
Easiest with a right-click in the Layer List on/near the Layer name.
Remind that Y+ adds those entities to an existing selection.

For a selection of entities one can simply set the Layer property in the Property Editor.
Or one could use 'Create Layer from Selection' (YT).
If we 'Duplicate' (DP) first then we copy things over.

The same can be achieved by Cut/Copy with reference and Paste to the target Layer that is set current.

Remark that entities that are part of a Block definition A) are not visible on the layer B) are not moved/copied.

I thank you and husky for the information.
I'm working on a drawing for a cut file for my plasma cutter and I'm having some problems I can't solve yet.
I think it's because of many layers in the drawing.
One problem is when I convert drawing to a cut file it automatically applies the lead ins & outs to inside and outside cuts
but some of the shapes are backwards. For example some of the cuts that should be inside cuts the conversion puts the leadin & leadout on the outside of the shape. The software I'm using is (MyPlasm CNC) won't let you edit each individual shape. If I select outside cut it puts the leads on the outside of all the cuts that should be cut on the outside of the line and leads on the inside of interior cuts. That's how it should work. This particular drawing I'm working on two of the cuts that should have interior leads the software puts them on the wrong side. I'm thinking if I can join all the layers into one it might work correctly.
thanks again,
Mike S.

Probably not, I think you need to reverse the orientation of those two problematic geometries.
For CW the right side is the interior side.
And that is the exterior for CCW.

Most CAM will figure out interior/exterior regardless CW/CCW.
Maybe it is detailed in your software application notes.

Please attache the drawing in question to your posting or an example drawing what shows the same problem for further investigations. Thanks.
