copying an element from the current calc(layer) to the other layer simultaneously

Post by heptaedron » Thu Jan 18, 2024 7:51 pm

W 10 Pro
QCAD 3 29 2
how to copy or create an element onto the all layers simultaneously?
I tried after selecting the layers (blue) but the copy is done onto the only one tagged as writable(with the pen)
for instance I drawed 5 layers one for each deck of a boat from a bitmap on another layer and I would like mark a hole through all the layer but not the one with the bitmap of course.
thanks a lot

Hi, and welcome to the QCAD forum.

One can not.
You need to set the current active layer for each 'hole' or for each duplicate.
New entities are always created on the active layer (pencil).
Only a few methods can send entities to a layer other than the current active one.

A solution would be:
- Draw the geometry on one layer.
- Select the required geometry.
- Duplicate (DP) ... The duplicates are now selected.
- Edit/alter the layer that they belong to in the Property Editor for all selected in one go.
- Repeat for the remaining layers in question.

There are many other ways to accomplish this.

Don't think of layers as stacked planes. In CAD there is no drawing order based on layers, drawing order is per entity.
Normally layers are intended to group things that should look alike, print alike.
Blue or black or ... , thick or thin or ... , continuously or dashed or dotted or ...

And then Blocks are intended to group geometry that belongs together.

That is the common practice but I understand that you prefer to group levels in layers ...
... Layers have much more controllable features (attributes) than Blocks.
One can hide them, lock them or arrange them in an hierarchic way with inherited attributes.
