I prefer drawing with black lines on white background. QCAD default is opposite.
I can change default background to white but I cannot seem to change default line colour to black so each time QCAD starts I have to edit the line colour to black.
How can I change the default to black.

The default color when starting QCAD is "By Layer", not white or black. So you're looking at the layer setup.

You can configure defaults for Layer 0 and new layers at:
Edit > Application Preferences > Layer > Add Layer
