Working with Templates

Creating a New Drawing (Based on a Template)

- Choose File > New from Template...
- Choose a template and click "Create New Drawing"

Adding Your Own Templates

You would typically want to store your own templates in a data folder, separate from the QCAD installation directory. Saving your own templates into the QCAD installation folder under libraries/templates is also possible but not recommended since it would make updating your QCAD version more difficult. Further, modern operating systems might not allow you to write or change files in an application directory. Under macOS, that directory is hidden away in the app bundle.

- Create a directory for your templates somewhere in your home folder, desktop, etc. For this example, we create a templates folder under /Users/andrew/Desktop/templates
- Add that folder to the templates folders of QCAD under Edit > Application Preferences > File > Templates > Template Folders

Save your template drawings into that folder or a subfolder of it. Template drawings are regular DXF or DWG drawing files which contain your border, list of preferred layers, blocks, layout blocks, etc.

Using Your Own Templates

Your templates are now ready for use. If you create a new drawing from a template using File > New from Template, you can choose your configured folder at the top, browse your templates and create new drawings from them.
