[SOLVED] The windows version of QCAD is slow
Hello,
I have dual boot OS system (Windows 10 & Ubuntu) at work and home.
The QCAD on Ubuntu is OK but the Windows version has slow response time (eg. zoom in & out, PAN, etc) depending on the complexity of the drawing. It is noticeable that the same file does not suffer from slow response on Ubuntu.
Can anyone help?
PC 1:
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4570 CPU @ 3.20GHz 3.20 GHz
8.00 GB
Windows 10 Pro / Ubuntu 20.04
PC 2:
AMD Ryzen™ 9 3900X CPU
32.00 GB
Windows 10 Pro / Ubuntu 20.04

Re: The windows version of QCAD is slow
Hello,
without us having the actual dxf/dwg it is difficult to figure why you it could be slow on Windows.
1. do you see any chance to post the drawing? Maybe make a copy and delete all sensitive data.
2. is the Windows QCAD version using exactly the same settings like the Ubuntu version?

Work smart, not hard: QCad Pro
Win10/64, QcadPro, QcadCam version: Current.

Thank you for reply.
1. I am not sure that the original drawing is allowed to be published!
2. The QCAD setting in Windows is the same as in Ubuntu.
3. I have turned off the visibility of the layers one by one.
4. One of the layers contain text only seems to be responsible for the problem, by turning it off (and keeping the other layers on) there is no slow response and the QCAD is working normally. It contains 3,461 items with different colors and text height but with same font type.
All other layers were turned off, font type of all items was changed but still the slow response!
5. There is another layer containing text items only (709 items). All items in this layer have the same color and text height. By turning on this layer there is no problem.
Any suggestions?

Re: The windows version of QCAD is slow
Hi,
Have a look at App.Prefs .. Graphics View .. Text Rendering.
Is that setting the same?

CVH

Yes, but you will not like it ....isam.anwar wrote: ↑Mon Jun 06, 2022 10:22 am1. I am not sure that the original drawing is allowed to be published!

#1 no problem - you explained the issue good enough to tackle it ...
#4 is most likely the guilty one. Ok, here is the thing: Computer programs are best in what they are built for. CAD isn't meant to do text - it is meant to do "drawings". Yes, it can do text but it is not good at it. Vice versa a word processing program can do drawings too - but the same problem - it isn't good at it.
Explanation: Every text entity in CAD is treated as a geometrical shape. A letter is built with lines, arcs etc etc. The more "fancy" the font is the more entities are used to built the letters. Just to give an idea - your 3500 text entities will most likely be built out of approx. 125000 lines and 1,5 Millionen arcs with a total lengths of 33000 units. That is a lot to render and it will definitely slow QCAD down ...
This said: Try to finder a less "fancy" font like "Standard". Nevertheless - turn the text layer always invisible when you are not directly working on it.

#4 I was wondering why it is working normally on Ubuntu version while there is an issue on Windows version? although it same file and same app. setting!
Luckily, I am doing the design and drawing work in Ubuntu. In Windows, it is only data entry for drawing data manually (text in the mentioned layer) using a software that does not work properly in Linux.
When changing the font of the text on that layer to "Standard" the response of QCAD in Windows was working normally.
Note:
I am using fonts other than "Standard" because when exporting drawing to PDF file format (using QCAD), the text with "Standard" font type will not converted as text and it is not searchable!
From past experience, the same happens to text with "Standard" font type when using AUTOCAD to export drawing to PDF file format, although AUTOCAD does not suffered from the slow down issue.
Re: [SOLVED] The windows version of QCAD is slow
Standard font is line art and not filled contours like TTF.isam.anwar wrote: ↑Tue Jun 07, 2022 12:26 amI am using fonts other than "Standard" because when exporting drawing to PDF file format (using QCAD), the text with "Standard" font type will not converted as text and it is not searchable!
One probably export geometry in that case and that is not text.
The tech behind QCAD is meant to be open source and of a whole different level.isam.anwar wrote: ↑Tue Jun 07, 2022 12:26 amalthough AUTOCAD does not suffered from the slow down issue.
The price tag is also of a whole different level ...

Re: [SOLVED] The windows version of QCAD is slow
I am comparing the performance of QCAD in UBUNTU (which does not suffer from slow down when using fonts other than "Standard") and QCAD in WINDOWS although the setting are the same and the drawing file is the sameCVH wrote: ↑Wed Jun 08, 2022 5:22 pmThe tech behind QCAD is meant to be open source and of a whole different level.isam.anwar wrote: ↑Tue Jun 07, 2022 12:26 amalthough AUTOCAD does not suffered from the slow down issue.

To show that WINDOWS is not blamed for this issue I gave an example of another software working in WINDOWS (namely AUTOCAD) that not suffer from this issue.
