When I select an entity / entities, no reference points (small, blue rectangles at line ends, etc.) are displayed.

You can configure the maximum number of reference points under:
Edit > Application Preferences > Graphics View > Appearance > Maximum number of reference points displayed
And the reference points size under:
Edit > Application Preferences > Graphics View > Appearance > Reference point size (px)
Be sure to also check the reference point color under:
Edit > Application Preferences > Graphics View > Colors > Primary reference points / Secondary reference points
Edit > Application Preferences > Graphics View > Appearance > Maximum number of reference points displayed
