Cylindrical projection tools

Post by sancyk » Wed Mar 09, 2022 7:41 pm

Is there a good tutorial on using the two cylindrical projection tools ? I'm trying to do something similar to this but can't figure out how to use the projection tool properly.

I can use the isometric projection tool to do the basic projection but I can't figure out how to draw the line where the two cylinders intersect (i.e. the hole). It's not an ellipse but a spline of some kind...like a Pringle potato chip lol.

I have my three orthogonal views done and was able to do a basic isometric view but i did not use the cylinder tool

Did you check the Reference Manual in QCAD Pro below Menu / Help / Reference Manual? It explains step by step how to master this tool.
Work smart, not hard: QCad Pro

So I did it the way i learned back in high school almost 35 years ago! I think it looks the way it's supposed to but I assume there is an easier way to do it with the built-in tools?

I can't really figure out the instructions for the isometric projection:

Description
This tool creates an isometric projection of the current selection onto a cylindric surface.

Usage
Select the entities you want to project.
Launch this tool.
Choose a viewing direction for the projection in the options tool bar.
Enter the diameter of the cylinder in the options tool bar.
Enter the rotation of the projected entities around the cylinder axis in degrees in the options tool bar.
Set the start point of the unprojected cylinder axis.
Set the end point of the cylinder axis.
Set the reference point for the projection. This is the point you will use to position the projection in the next step.
Move the mouse cursor to the position where you want to create the projection and click to set the position. Before setting the definitive position, you might still want to adjust the cylinder diameter, rotation angle and viewing direction in the options tool bar, until the preview matches your expectations.

Of course. And for the life of me, I can't figure it out :?

Please post the dxf where you are working on and I'll check tonight how I can help you, ok? The dxf has to show what you try to accomplish ...

Here you go. I did the isometric view the old fashioned way by manually segmenting the cylinders and drawing the intersecting lines between the two. It was somewhat tedious to do so if there's an easier way to do it with the tools, that would be great.

Thanks for the help

Outstanding. Real easy to use once you understand the tool. What took me about an hour to do manually was done in 2 minutes with the tool. I'm even happier that what I remember from high school gave the same results

Thank you very much for the tutorial. Much appreciated.

And the ability to rotate the projection is even more useful. I rotated it by 20 degrees to make it look better.

I added some "threads" inside the hole. I had to do the ellipse manually since I could not figure out how to "rotate" just a flat circle for the isometric projection

This projection tool is da bomb! Very fast to do an isometric view from your orthogonals.
