'SOLVED' File cannot be opened by laser cutting companies
Hello, so over the last 18 months or so, i have been using QCAD Pro to draw up simple brackets to be cut by 3rd party laser cutters. This has worked fine, until the other day when they said that when they tried to open 1 particular file, it would not open. I updated QCAD to 3.27.6, but they're still having trouble. They haven't changed their software, and to cross check, i tried another laser company and they could not open that particular file either. Any help as to what is going on here would be great! I have attached a file that wouldn't open for them. Thanks heaps in advance.

Re: File cannot be opened by laser cutting companies
Hi,
Nothing wrong with the dxf ...
The layer with dimensions is frozen.
The dxf is in version R32, maybe they can handle it in an earlier version.

Hi NGoode,
it is easily reproducible with that example file but so far I have no clue what is causing the issue.
@Andrew
Any idea ...?

Re: File cannot be opened by laser cutting companies
@Husky: How were you able to reproduce? Which other software did you check with?
I can load the file fine here with Autodesk products.
I did notice an invalid dimension entity in the file and removed it (see attached). I hope that solves the issue.

Re: File cannot be opened by laser cutting companies
I tried with cheap to expensive software. A few loaded the drawing just fine - a few weren't able to load it at all.
I tried with a AutoDesk produkt too. Loading failed with following message:
AutoCAD-InvalidFile Sorry, the drawing file is invalid and cannot be viewed. - Please try to recover the file in AutoCAD. TranslationWorker-InternalFailure Unrecoverable exit code from extractor: -1073741831
It has solved the problem on my site. Thanks for looking into this!

Re: File cannot be opened by laser cutting companies
All,
For those how wonder ... Final.dxf
Aligned Dimension @(800,75); handle 0x1b5; Text position is (NaN, NaN, NaN)
TA selects it, the Selection Filter can that too and of course Misc .. Select By Handle (TH)

Noticed that the fixed file is in R27 format. What happens if that would also be R32?

Re: File cannot be opened by laser cutting companies
Thanks all! I sent that file on and it worked. Could you explain how the problem was resolved, so i can correct it in future?
Re: File cannot be opened by laser cutting companies
That could be twofold ...
The invalid dimension and that the fixed file is in R27 format.
One could trial the fix file saved in R32 to eliminate the latter.
QCAD has no problem with the NaN values of the Dimension.
It can't be found with MZ, although that finds two zero-length Line entities.
One can not select it normally and only as describe higher.
When I knew that it was a Dimension, I found it by isolating the 22 good ones.

Re: File cannot be opened by laser cutting companies
All,
It seems that I can recreate the invalid Dimension.
DA asks for 3 positions and then restarts the cycle.
When I indicate twice the same spot:
- The preview disappears.
- It doesn't matter where I pick the 3th position.
A Dimension entity is created that will have Text position @(NaN, NaN, NaN)
This file can be saved and re-opened with the invalid Dimension re-appearing.
It is my opinion that this should not be cast to the drawing in the first place.
A Null-Dimension entity isn't visible and serves no use.

Re: File cannot be opened by laser cutting companies
If needed switch all layer visible, thaw frozen layer, unlock locked layer.
Then launch "Detect zero-length entities". You will find it below Menu/Modify/Detect. Use in the Options bar of that tool the default tolerance of 0.001. Delete all now selected "Zero-length entities" and save the drawing for your laser service. Done!
