Default Drawing template Locations

Post by Wilko500 » Sat Oct 29, 2022 8:31 pm

After long break from Qcad thank to life complications, I am back. First job was to finish up my A4 drawing template complete with all attributes in title block working. That done then create user template folder, add it to application preferences and try it out. All done but I have two issues with how it is at present. My steps were
  • 1. Create user template folder
    2. Add path and default template to application preferences (File - Templates)
    3. Exit Qcad to save preferences
    4. Open Qcad
    5. Close the default drawing "Untitled 1 - Qcad"
    6. Start new drawing with New - From template
    7. Here the dialogue opens but still points at the default application template folder
Two issues are
A) Automatically using the default drawing every time Qcad is started is not always what is needed although it is easy to close that drawing so perhaps not a major problem. What I. would like here is a choice to open the standard default template or the user template. If the default template drawing is not provided in step 2 above we are almost there. Opening Qcad goes to default application template but item B is still an issue

B) IMO it makes no sense for the New Drawing from Template dialogue to still default to the application default AFTER a user supplied template folder is added. I note that the user added folder does appear in the dropdown list.

I would prefer that either the user folder is at the top of the drop down list ie the default or a means of removing/hiding the application default. In the case that there are multiple user added folders then the order can be specified in the template dialogue.

I am using a Mac environment so I cannot access the Qcad application folders library files where I presume the configurations are kept

Thanks
Richard

Update

I now find that after starting and stopping Qcad multiple times the user added template has become default I the New Drawing From Template dialogue. Don't know if this is designed behaviour of whether I have done something to change the drop down list order. So now I seem to have what I wanted.

Maybe my post has just become irrelevant??

Thanks
Richard

Hi,

It should be common to remember the last used folder.
So, yes this intended behavior.

A new file is not based on a template.

Certainly a new file can be based on a template!
Work smart, not hard: QCad Pro
Win10/64, QcadPro, QcadCam version: Current.
If a thread is considered as "solved" please change the title of the first post to "[solved] Title..."

Well, all three are right, tested it with setting the default template to a known one.
Got a new empty one with Ctrl+N and I wrote the reply.
Just now, just the same.
Went back to Template Preferences and the field was empty.

In all 3.27.6 was restarted 3 times and 3.27.8 2 times.
It might that I changed another Application Preference in the same instance.
Can't really say in what version I initially changed the default template.
Shouldn't matter at all because they share the same QCAD.ini file.
I do remember in having seen recent commits regarding the App.Prefs.

On a retry (on 3.27.6) I got the message to restart QCAD.
Now I get the intended template for a new drawing with Ctrl+N.

I only have to get rid of the default again ....
The shortest and surest way for me is to delete "DefaultTemplate=..." under [Templates].
All back to normal. 8)
